The recent extreme weather events across the country have caused slips affecting some properties. The immediate priority is everyone’s safety. A geotechnical assessment of the sites will be required to determine the best solution to stabilise the land, both short and long-term.
It is recommended that an accurate topographical survey of the slip and any houses is conducted by aerial UAV to assess the slip extent and remedial design solution.
In this recent project, UAV video, imagery and 3D point cloud surveying was used to provide the detailed assessment of slip damage for both insurance and remedial design purposes.

- Visual and topographical data
Our Engineers can work with your Geotechnical Engineers to:
- Design the engineered remedial solution (i.e. earthworks, retaining); and
- Project manage the consent and construction process.
At Cato Bolam we can provide topographical survey by conventional survey methods, and/or by use of UAV and laser scanning. By using UAV or 3D laser scanning technology, we can complete surveys in unsafe conditions and allow assessment and design to continue while conditions remain unsafe.
Our engineers can assess the volumes and depths of the slip and debris by comparing the post slip 3D model to Lidar surfaces which represent the previous ground profile. We can provide long sections for assessment and from there we can work with the Geotechnical and Structural engineers to design the remedial solution and provide plans for construction purposes.
Cato Bolam can also design drainage systems that may be associated with the necessary remedial works and if necessary, we can manage and obtain any consents that may be needed. Our teams are skilled in Project Management of multiple disciplines and can co-ordinate all disciplines involved and also manage construction of the remedial works if required.
