Joshua Wium

Joshua is an Associate and Senior Ecologist based in Cato Bolam’s Orewa office. Since 2017, he has worked across rural subdivision and urban development projects throughout Auckland and Northland, providing ecological advice to landowners, developers and multidisciplinary project teams.

Joshua undertakes stand-alone wetland, stream, Significant Ecological Area (SEA) and ecological effects assessments, and provides ecological input as part of wider development teams. His advice helps establish what needs to be protected, where development may be possible and what ecological work is required to support a consent application. Bringing ecology into a project before the layout is fixed allows ecological constraints and restoration opportunities to inform the design, reducing the risk of redesign and consenting difficulties later.

Joshua’s experience includes complex ecological consenting matters involving stream reclamation and offsite ecological offsetting, including work at 120 Kowhai Road. He works closely with planners, engineers and council ecologists to assess proposed works, respond to technical concerns and develop practical measures to address ecological effects. His advice draws on field assessment and a clear understanding of how ecological requirements influence the design and delivery of a development.

His experience in native bush and wetland restoration also supports his work on environmental enhancement subdivisions and transferable development rights. He helps landowners understand how ecological protection and restoration can support subdivision opportunities and advises on the planting, maintenance and long-term management needed to deliver lasting environmental outcomes.

Outside work, Joshua enjoys fishing, gardening and growing fruit and vegetables. He values time with his young family, friends and church community.
