New amendments are underway for the RMA and Freshwater NPS with a forthcoming bill being introduced in Parliament on March 7. The bill proposes a ‘one-stop-shop’ that aims to streamline the complexities of multiple legislations for large-scale infrastructure and development projects.

MDRS – New Housing Rules – Auckland Intensifies

Auckland Council has introduced a plan change (Plan Change 78) that incorporates the new Medium Density Residential Standards (MDRS). Over much of Auckland’s residential urban area, and subject to meeting the new standards, the new housing rules now enable 3 storeys and 3 dwellings per site as of right.

Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) Amendment Bill Passed
December 2021
The New Housing Supply Bill has passed its third reading and will shortly become law. This bill amends the Resource Management Act 1991 with the aim of rapidly accelerate the supply of housing to address some of the issues with housing choice and affordability that New Zealand currently faces in its largest cities. The new Medium Density Residential Standards (MDRS) will be introduced by councils, including Auckland Council, and have varying effect from August 2022.
